Night Saigon Street Food Tour (Bike The Night)
What makes this tour unique?
In this city of almost 13 million, you have plenty of ways to spend your time and money. There are so many amazing excursions, tours and places vying for your dollars, so it could be difficult to stray off the tourist beaten path, but they are worthwhile. One of our most recommended tours is ‘Bike the Night’.
We shall dart through some pretty gnarly traffic as we made our way from one delectable food stall to another. Go with Hana Tourist Team, you will have several stops along the way and enjoy plenty of great dishes across a wide variety of Vietnamese cuisine and the itinerary shall be flexible for vegetarians, Hala and such.
What makes our Tour unique is that our guides are all city residents with certified travel experience who will take you through the labyrinth of alleys in our neighborhood whilst introducing you to little gems along the way. Connecting foreigner visitors and locals, darting through some pretty gnarly traffic as we made our way from one delectable food stall to another shall need several efforts and our guides work with a huge joy and happiness.
So regardless if you are you are local, foreigner, visitor or entertaining out of town guests who want to see what real city life is like in Saigon & eat well, this ‘Bike the Night’ tour is terrific. You shall definitely be weighing down the back of the bike more at the end of the evening than at the start!
What do you expect?
From 17.50 – 18.00, Hana Tourist’s Guides will offer a convenient pickup at your designated hotel or location in Ho Chi Minh City. Each customer shall be taken care by a personal guide who is also your driver.
First, we shall drive you to the heart of the city center – Nguyen Hue Walking street. We are proud to be the only night-life activities operator in town who can lift you up the city roof top of a building on Nguyen Hue Walking street. This is a broad walking promenade in the middle of District 1 city centre, where is flanked by some beautiful French colonial architectural wonders like the People’s Comittee, the Rex Hotel, the National Treasury and the luxury shopping mall and officetel Bixteco 68 and at the other end of the promenade you find the Saigon River from where you can enjoy a nice view with a breeze. There is no place where you are briefed about our city’s now and then by our guides while enjoying a cool Saigon atmosphere on the top of Nguyen Hue square.
After discovering the city from its inner side, we shall drive you to the other side of Saigon River, reaching District 2 for a stunning look back the city and see how height it is during the night. District 2 is now the one of the prioritized area for investment by the government of Ho Chi Minh City and this is a place to illustrate how modern the city should be.
We shall pay a quick stop on Thu Thiem Bridge where our guides often name it ‘Saigon Harbour’ or ‘Lovers’ Bridge’ (because of the number of Saigon couples snuggling on the curbside), this 2008 piece of infrastructure crosses the wide arm of the Saigon River, affording some of the best and most-photographed views of the city. At night, with the galaxy of office lights flickering in the city’s high-rises, it’s an impressive vista.
We shall then head back the city again, passing the Saigon River. Don’t be scared, we are not going to swim all the way back but glide beneath the Saigon River on the spooky, subterranean Thu Thiem River Tunnel – the longest river tunnel in Southeast Asia – until it emerges out District 1 for our foodie part of the Tour.
Our first pick for the night food tour shall be ‘Bò Lá Lốt’ – Vietnamese Grilled Beef in Piper Lolot Leaves. ‘Bò Lá Lốt’ is a popular dish in the South of Vietnam and it is usually made from two main ingredients that are easy to find: grilled fresh beef and piper lolot. Besides, it can be eaten with some vegetables such as fish mint, lettuce leaves, basil, and cucumber. This is the first example to learn that the Vietnamese have a very rich cuisine not only in the number of dishes but also in their unique harmonious taste. The Vietnam traditional food is a combination of many ingredients for the good health. Vietnamese people pay special attention to the yin and yang relationship in food which includes the yin-yang in food, the yin-yang balance in the body. Vietnam food must be enough five flavors such as sour, spicy, sweet, salty, bitter and five colors as white, blue, yellow, red, black. For instance, the hot Grilled Beef (heat) shall be eaten with herbal/vegetables (cold). Therefore, Vietnam traditional food is very healthy and delicious. Our guide shall demonstrate how to make a quick wrap and roll with the rice paper and you will be amazed at the way of fish source dipping, too.
We then continue the drive to one of the distinct backstreet of city, right at the center of Ho Thi Ky Flower market. You will reach a hiden food street where is crazily crowded with people selling and buying food here. Our guide shall offer you the next dish – ‘bánh tráng nướng’ – Grill girdle cake or ‘Vietnamese Pizza’. Along with a huge range of Vietnamese noodles, rice paper is one of the most common ingredients in Vietnamese food. Unlike the thin version for wrapping at the grill beef food, the thicker rice paper here is for grilling. Rice paper is slathered with butter then grilled on coals with some cheese, eggs (either quail or chicken eggs), green onion, shredded pork, chicken or beef, and some tiny shrimp on top. These creativeness make an unique street dish you would never ever forget.
A special shout out then shall be for the delicious avocado and coconut ice cream. The avocado lends a lovely, appetizing color, and it has the nice aroma of coconut. Simply irresistible. This is definitely something different that we pick to impress you.
Getting out the Flower Market, we shall offer you the chance to taste our ‘Cơm Tấm’ – broken rice. This is an everyday meal made from broken rice grains. Once considered “poor people’s rice,” farmers would collect the fractured rice grains that broke during the milling and sell it for cheap. But over the years, the Saigonese became rather fond of the broken rice grains and today, its eaten all around Ho Chi Minh City. You will be served with a caramelized pork chop, a bed of pickled vegetables or we shall give you the option of customizing your order.
Another drive through the District 5 – a District for the Chinese origin families or Chinatown following with a Nguyen Trai street – Fashion Street shall kick into your curiosity on this sleepless city and make you ready for our last stop where we shall get piss on a local street beer restaurant.
Just think of your own ability to sit on very small chairs looking out the busy street with a cold Saigon Special Beer in hand. It is really eye-opening for visitors and residents alike to experience how Vietnamese people drink on the street is. Beer is unlimited and this is the chance for both customers and guides to exchange humor or humor is a must for this tour.
The tour shall happily end once we drive you back your place surely knowing that you, as guests, have better connected with this place and our Vietnamese people.
